Caps roll Preds, 4-1

The Nashville Predators continued their preseason slate Wednesday with another loss away from home. This loss came at the expense of the high-flying Washington Capitals, who decisively beat the Predators by a score of 4-1.

Washington got off to a quick start courtesy of a breakaway goal from Eric Fehr at the 4:37 mark of the first period. They added on to that lead in the second period with a three-goal barrage. Nicklas Backstrom scored on a beautiful play with Marcus Johansson and Alex Ovechkin. About a minute later Fehr notched his second goal of the night to give the Capitals a 3-0 edge. In the final minute of the period, Ovechkin made it 4-0 via the power play.

The Predators did get on the scoreboard late in the third period, when Victor Bartley’s shot from the blue line was tipped in by Gabriel Bourque on the power play. The goal came with 14 seconds remaining.

The biggest news coming from the game was yet another injury. Patric Hornqvist, who was banged up all last season, left the game early due to a lower-body injury and did not return. Hornqvist suffered the injury taking a shot to the leg in front of the net. This came on the heels of the Predators losing Viktor Stalberg for up to a month due to a shoulder injury.

With Shea Weber and Roman Josi sitting out Wednesday’s contest, rookie defenseman Seth Jones took on another heavy workload and led all skaters with 24:14 of ice time. Carter Hutton played the entire game between the pipes and made 26 saves on 30 shots against. Washington’s Michal Neuvirth made 33 saves on 34 shots against.

Also of note: Mike Fisher, Rich Clune and Eric Nystrom all dropped the gloves and engaged in fisticuffs.

The Predators will close out the preseason with a Friday night tilt on Long Island against the New York Islanders.
