Over the weekend we took a look at Pekka Rinne’s new goalie mask for the 2013-14 season. Today, backup goalie Carter Hutton was kind enough to talk about his new mask and the nuances in its design.
Unlike most goalies, Hutton does not get his mask designed by Dave Gunnarsson (a.k.a. DaveArt). Jesse’s Custom Designs out of Boston, Mass., has designed Hutton’s masks since college and designed this one recently as he makes the transition to Nashville.
“What he (Jesse Acciacca) was going for was the Marvel Comic Sabertooth, because of the gold hair to go with the gold and accent the jerseys. It’s a Sabertooth wearing a predator mask; so you can see the skull and the fangs coming down,” Hutton said.
“On the back [plate] it’s the Sabertooth’s hair. Also, I always have a fish. Every summer I do a fishing tournament back home with all my buddies – about 30 of us. Every year this fish is on the T-shirts that we make, and each year it’s doing something different. The last four years I get the fish with a Canadian flag somehow, but this year [the fish] has a guitar and a cowboy hat. The back is always my kind of thing, just to remember friends and family and people back home.
“Jesse did a great job with this; he puts a lot of pride in it. I’m not very creative so I let him take the ball and run with it. This one is definitely my favorite.”
