It’s a new season which means most goalies around the league will have a new mask. Pekka Rinne has a modified look to his mask for the upcoming season, as it features the facehugger from the movie Alien vs. Predator.
“It’s a pretty cool idea. The predator head is in the background and something is against his face. It’s same theme I have had going,” Rinne said.
Like most goalies, Rinne has his masks painted and designed by Dave Gunnarsson – known by most as ‘DaveArt’.
“It’s kind of a continuation of my old helmets the last few years,” Rinne said of the mask. “Dave Gunnarsson comes up with his ideas and I’m usually cool with them. He’s a talented guy, so I let him do his work.
“Usually I like to have a couple of my own little things here and there. This time around it got to the last minute so he just painted it and sent it. I talk to him about the design but at the end of the day he’s the one who comes up with this. He has a weird imagination – in a good way. He’s a great artist.”
Two years ago the Predators held a contest for fans to design Rinne’s mask that he wore for one game. He hopes they do that again.
“I’m going to have a couple other masks, too, just to have fun with it. Hopefully we do the ‘design a mask’ competition again – that’s fun for me and fun for the fans, so hopefully we can do it for a good cause,” he said.
