My ring is a cluster of small, round-cut diamonds. The other day while at a friend’s house, the light was coming in through the windows and hitting my ring. The light spots that reflected onto his table, were tiny rainbows.

You are watching: Do real diamonds have rainbow sparkle

I thought diamonds weren’t supposed to reflect rainbows? (Again, I’m talking about the little spots that were relfected onto the table, not what I saw inside the diamonds.)

I went to a very highly recommended jeweler, and even let him know that I used to work with a jeweler back in my hometown… so I dont *think* he’d try and screw me over… my sister said because it’s a cluster ring, the light is boucing off of all the little diamonds everywhere and creating rainbows but.. i’m not sure.

Could these be fake diamonds? I love the way my ring looks, but if my fiance PAID for diamonds, y’know… money doesn’t grow on trees… lol

All diamonds reflect “rainbows.” It’s called fire and a sign of a well-cut stone.

EDIT: It’s also normal for them to reflect on other surfaces if the lighting environment is right. Anything that reflects light does the same thing.

Diamonds reflect rainbows ONTO other objects. They do not sparkle with rainbows in the stone itself. It’s hard to explain unless you have a diamond and a cz next to each other, but diamonds have a white/grey/silver sparkle in the stone itself, whereas cz has a rainbow interior sparkle.

My diamond shoots rainbows all over the place when the sun hits it. Especially in the car, it’s so much fun! But in normal lighting it will have the usual white sparkle on the stone its self. however in certain lighting it does have rainbow sparkle on the stone, a VERY well cut diamond can do this and it doesn’t look like a CZ.

Great post by vorpalette:(Reply # 3)

Lol, “Shooting Rainbows” ROCK… means you have a well cut stone.

I’ve had my ERing 11 months now… and I am very pleased that summertime (and more sunshine is back)… because this baby glitterslike all get out in Natural Sunlight… like sitting on the patio, or in the car.

Only other places I’ve been able to “simulate” something even similar indoors… is if there are pin-point halogen pot-lights around (like they have in Jewellery Stores).

Lol, Winter has been far too long (and overcast) this year… I’m happy to have the sparkle back !!

Hope this helps,

vorpalette: Depending on what angle I look at my diamond you can see rainbows inside of it. It’s normal with a well cut stone if it’s large enough to reflect light within itself.

No, probably not.

Diamonds have plenty of “fire,” just not such a high proportion of fire to white light return as diamond-imitations like CZ or moissanite. You should see white light being returned back from your diamonds too, especially in less intense light. If it’s always way more colored light than white light coming back from them, that’s more questionable.

As well, the fact that the “fire” was outside of the body of the diamonds sounds like they are diamonds… moissanite specifically (and new CZ as well, but to a lesser degree) tends to have it inside the stone as well.
