You are watching: How many amps does an rv air conditioner draw
Has everyone measured the current draw of their 13500 btu waiting conditioner. I"m looking to view what it actually takes to run the ac with a generator. I would choose to purchase a small, quiet, and easy to manage generator similar to the Honda 2000 watt or the Yamaha 2400 watt. Both that those are very quiet and light weight, yet will they run an ac? I have used a Honda 3000 i beg your pardon worked great but was hard to move roughly by myself.I have a 2007 KZ 2450 fifth wheel, current upgrade from a TT.John
Well 13500 BTU/hr converts to 3954 Watts. Wikipedia"s post on airconditioning in the section on portable A/Cs states: "Modern devices run on about 1 to 3 proportion i.e., to produce 3 kW the cooling this will usage 1 kW the electricity." for this reason the 13,500 BTU unit will use at least 1300 watt of strength from a generator. But do remember the you will have other AC lots in the RV -- the microwave being the biggy.
A common 13,500 btu RV a/c will use 14.5-15A and also a high effectiveness model around 11.5 amps. That"s under full load (compressor running and fan top top high). The tricky part is compressor start-up, when the amp fill doubles for a few seconds and also gives you a quick 3000-3600 watt load. If this passes quickly enough most small generator have the right to ignore the overload, yet sometimes the breaker will pilgrimage or the a/c won"t start as result of low current.

I have a Honda 2000 and also keep in mind that they space rated in ~ 1600 watts no 2000. I additionally have the 13500 btu roof units and also will do some tests v the Honda 2000 and also post the results here. Currently my only issue would be begin up existing draw.
Interesting fact on the Honda 2,000 watt inverter jobs.. Thanks.Another fact to take into consideration is whereby as a A/C may want 1300 watts RUNNINGThe beginning current on that compressor have the right to astound you
