You are watching: How much weight can concrete hold

I"m working on my summer hobby right now which is fish keeping. I"d like to build a 864 gallon aquarium in my basement. It will have a footprint of 54 square feet and a dead load of 128 lbs/ square foot. Is this ok on the basement floor? It is roughly 4" poured slab.I think it will but I just wanted to make sure....

The tank will have a sealed top except for a 4" pipe that is vented via a small fan to the out doors.

If it"s a slab on grade you"ll be fine since typical concrete can withstand 3000 psi.The problem is what is the soil below it. If the soil can"t support the weight your slab will crack. Worst case figure your soil can support 2000 PSF, so add the weight of concrete (about 50 PSF for your slab) and 128 PSF (Tank) and you don"t even come close to 2000PSF.

According to those #"s I"m way safe. All that weight seemed like a lot to me but I guess spread over a 6"x9" footprint isn"t that bad. Thanks
