Abstract

The mitotic and also meiotic chromosomes of the semi-aquatic rodent Ichthyomys pittieri (Rodentia, Cricetinae) from Venezuela to be analyzed by method of standard staining and also several banding techniques. The diploid chromosome variety of this rare species is 2n = 92, which is the highest value recognized for mammals. It is assumed the this exceptionally high chromosome number is the result of recurring centric fissions. The karyotype that /. Pittieri was contrasted with the of Anotomys leander, because that which a diploid number of 2n = 92 has additionally been reported.
